Panhandling Around Tallahassee at Big Oak RV Park

March 3, 2024, we left Winter Garden RV Resort and headed north and then west to Tallahassee in the Florida panhandle, our home state’s capital, to check out this new-to-us area for the week.

We left Winter Garden RV Resort on time at around 8 AM. We target 8 AM by starting to disconnect utilities, pull in the four slides, check and likely air up the motorhome times, pull out to the front of the park, and hook up the Jeep for flat-towing. That usually takes about an hour to accomplish.

Our first destination was not outside of Florida, but it was a stop in the panhandle at Tallahassee which we usually fly by on our way to something else North or West of the panhandle. We thought we should check out the capitol area of our “home state” and we spent a week there from March 3 – 10, 2024.

Big Oak RV presents a bit of a retro feel on the road. However, you will find that they do have some pull-through sites that meet the needs of the modern big rig. In the center, you will find the transient overnighters and are surrounded by the full-time sites.

The Big Oak RV Park is located on the northwest side of Tallahassee and is a very easy off-and-on from I-10 up to US-27.

Warning: Google Maps sent us through a residential area on the backside of the campground, thinking it had to route us to the Southbound side of the US-27.  However, there is a left turn lane and a crossover into the driveway of the RV park that Google is not aware is there. If you come up US-27 from the South, you can turn left into the campground.  From the North, you will be on the same side.

Site #58 at the Big Oak RV Park, a pull-through site that required a little bit of leveling from front to back. The sites are well maintained with a decent picnic table and concrete outdoor living area pads. Big Oak will not charge for your stay until the time of check-in. However, they do not offer refunds and ask that you give them a heads-up if you do not plan to arrive.

Tallahassee is a fairly small city and it took some doing and (we think) we found the capitol building among some very old and run-down parts of town. This part of the panhandle is exactly what you would expect, it is like being in the extreme south of Alabama and Georgia. Lots of swamps, trees, and big bugs.  We had one big hit but several misses at restaurants in the area.

If you happen to be traveling across I-10 and need an easy stop, including a nice pull-through site at a reasonable price, check out the Big Oak RV Park.

A family recommendation was Lofty Pursuits in Tallahassee, Florida. We had a great brunch, followed by an even more amazing “Deep Dark Brownie Dreams” chocolate brownie covered in ganache, topped with chocolate ice cream more ganache, and chocolate chips!
